When rivers run dry, soil turns to dust and wetlands disappear, people do not simply “migrate”. They are displaced — often by decisions that no one is ever held accountable for.
Today we announce the founding of HERA — Human, Environment, Resilience & Accountability Association, an independent, non-partisan not-for-profit incorporated in Canada on 27 October 2026, with a founding board spanning Canada, Italy and the Netherlands.
HERA exists to study and explain one of the defining links of our time: the relationship between environmental conditions and human displacement, and the human rights and accountability questions that sit between them.
What we will do
- Research: conduct and support independent studies, surveys and fieldwork, and publish what we find openly.
- Educate: organise workshops, seminars, conferences and public discussions that turn evidence into understanding.
- Connect: work with researchers, universities, community organisations and the public across Canada and around the world.
- Ask why: follow the evidence to the decisions behind environmental harm, and insist on accountability.
Our first programme will focus on water, land and displacement in Iran and the wider region, where environmental collapse and the absence of accountability reinforce each other.
We are starting small, and we are starting with you. Become a founding member, join our research network, or simply follow our work.
